History
Little is known about the history of Togo before the fifteenth century but there have been signs that the ewe people (find more about the ewe people in tribes) have lived there for more than 7 centuries.
Togo means “beside the waters” in the Ewe language (one of the national languages of Togo) . The country is generally less than 100 km wide and is about 550 km long. Togo was a French colony until after being invaded by Germany in 1894, the larger country of Togo land was split between the French and Germany in 1914. At independence, the eastern half of French Togo land became Togo while western Germany Togo land became part of Ghana.
